The Winkeltal valley is a 12 km long side valley of the Villgratental valley, which branches off directly in the centre of Außervillgraten. Surrounded by the Villgrater mountains, whose peaks reach almost 3000m, the Winkeltal valley is a true natural jewel. Here you will find an untouched cultural landscape lined with rustic alpine pastures, old forests of spruce and larch in a magnificent mountain scenery. About 5 km from Außervillgraten is the Reiterstube restaurant. The landscape around the Reiterstube restaurant offers extensive possibilities for leisure activities, especially in winter. In summer the end of the valley, the so-called Volkzein with the Volkzeiner Hut, is a popular starting point for hikes and challenging mountain tours.

The Winkeltal is THE SECRET TIP in the Villgratental valley and is worth a visit both in summer and winter.

Toboggan Run Tilliachalmweg

Below the Reiterstube restaurant is the 1.6 km long Tilliachalmweg toboggan run. The toboggan run is certified with the Tyrolean natural toboggan run seal of approval and is one of the most popular toboggan runs in East Tyrol. From the starting hut at the upper end of the toboggan run, you take the medium-difficulty route lined by wooden planks back down to the valley, overcoming a difference in altitude of about 400m.

For the little ones there is a prepared track for sliding plates & Co in the finish area of the toboggan run. The track is illuminated every evening from 17.00 to 22.30. In winter you can admire the traditional iceberg in the shape of the “Three Peaks” in the small reservoir directly next to the finish area of the toboggan run, which offers a beautiful play of colours in the evening. The use of the toboggan run is free of charge. Toboggans can be rented at the Reiterstube restaurant.

Horse-drawn sleigh ride

A very special experience are horse-drawn sleigh rides in the romantic winter landscape of the Winkeltal valley. Deeply wrapped in blankets, you can simply switch off and let your soul dangle on a ride through snow-covered meadows and forests. The winter landscape all around, the sound of the snow and the fascinating panorama make these horse-drawn sleigh rides a very special experience. Ski Touring

The Winkeltal valley is also a popular starting point for medium to sometimes very challenging ski tours. Due to walking times of up to 4 hours and the steeply sloping mountain flanks, the Winkeltal valley is an attractive ski touring area, especially for experienced ski tourers. All the more reason to assess the current avalanche danger and plan the tour carefully. The best touring conditions can be found in late winter or spring.

The most popular ski touring peaks in the Winkeltal valley are the Gölbner (2,943m), the Regenstein (2,891m), the Hochalmspitz (2,797m), the Hochgrabe (2,951m) and the Hohes Haus (2,784m).

Winter hiking

The Winkeltal valley also offers the possibility for a wonderful winter hike, where you can experience nature in a particularly intensive way. Starting point is again the Reiterstube restaurant. On the prepared alpine road into the valley, you walk past the Mooshof Alm to the Leiter Alm 2 km away and back again. The winter hike is rounded off by a stop at the Reiterstube restaurant, where you can enjoy culinary delights.

Especially on sunny days this winter hike is an unforgettable experience.
