Few places in the world can offer what the Villgratental valley has to offer: Access to several square kilometres of epic backcountry, ideal for ski tours from beginners to experts. Many routes in the Villgratental valley range between 800 and 1000 metres in altitude and have medium difficulty levels. Especially in Außervillgraten, however, you will find some very challenging ski tours with up to 1400 metres of altitude difference in the high alpine terrain. Here it is advisable to book a mountain and ski guide who will show you how to move safely in the open terrain and lead you to unforgettable summit experiences.

Ski Tour Gölbner (2943m)

The Gölbner is a challenging ski tour with 6.4km of ascent and 1360 meters of altitude difference. This tour starts in the Winkeltal valley in Außervillgraten shortly before the Niederbrugger Alm at about 1600m. Here a forest road or a summer climb leads to the Strass Alm at 1987m. From this alpine pasture you ascend briefly and then keep right along the summer path, which leads to Gölbnerboden at approx. 2420m. From Gölbnerboden on, the further ascent is highly avalanche-prone and may only be done in safe avalanche conditions. The route follows a steeply ascending flank to the northern Gölbnerscharte at 2680m. From the Scharte, you ascend via the north ridge, if possible on skis or on foot with increasing steepness, to the summit of the Gölbner at 2943m.

Ski Tour Regenstein 2891m

The Regenstein is a very demanding firn ski tour with 1300 meters of altitude difference in the ascent and can only be done in safe conditions. This tour starts at the Niederbrugger Alm at 1600m. Here you go about 600m into the valley to the Geiregg Alm at 1623m, where you cross the bridge and follow the forest road uphill to the Unterarn Alm at about 1650m. Then you ascend over the forest to the Oberarn Alm and over several floors in open terrain to the bottom of the valley at about 2440m. From here the route leads again out of the valley over a ramp to the Mitterberg and the small Regenstein at 2540m.  Now the route runs along the mountain ridge in the opposite direction until the entrance to the 40° steep summit gully, which leads up to the right below the summit at about 100m. After having mastered the gully, you will reach the Regenstein over a short stretch of the ridge.

Ski Tour Hochalmspitz 2797m

The Hochalmspitz is with 1200 meters of altitude difference and a walking time of over 3 hours a conditionally challenging ski tour. The start is at the Niederbrugger Alm at 1600m, where you walk into the valley along the alpine road past alpine landscapes to the summer car parking lot of the Volkzeiner Hut at 1886m. Here you cross the Winkeltalbach stream in the direction of the Volkzeiner Hut and initially climb the steep slope above the Volkzeiner Hut with several hairpin bends. This slope can only be ascended in absolutely safe touring conditions. After the first steep slope the Tschuingen Hut at 2213m is reached. From here, the route initially climbs steeply once again until you finally reach the Kleinitzer Törl at 2614m over several plateaus in a north-easterly direction.  From the Kleinitzer Törl the tour leads along the very steep ridge to the summit of the Hochalmspitz.

Ski Tour Hochgrabe 2951m

The Hochgrabe is a high winter tour with 1360 meters of altitude difference and a very long ascent of 10km. This tour starts at the Niederbrugger Alm at 1600m, where you walk along the alpine road past alpine landscapes to the summer car parking lot of the Volkzeiner Hut at 1886m. Here you cross the Winkeltalbach stream and continues to the end of the valley, where the ascent towards the Heinkar Alm at 2100m takes place. From the Heinkar Alm you walk on the right side of the Schrentenbach waterfall to the Schrentenbachboden and further over the Wilde Platte to the summit slope. Once you reach the summit slope, you finally climb to the summit ridge (approx. 2850m) at a favourable point and follow this to the Hochgrabe at 2951m.

Ski Tour Hohes Haus 2784m

The Hohe Haus is one of the insider tips among ski tourers, as powder snow is often found due to the north-eastern slopes. With 1180m in the ascent, the Hohe Haus is one of the most demanding ski tours in the Villgratental. The tour starts from the Niederbrugger Alm at 1600m, where you follow the alpine road into the valley to the Moschwald. Here a path branches off to the left just before the Lackenkammern Alm at 1803m and after a short walk the summer climb to the Villponer Alm shows the way up. Once you reach the Villponer Alm, follow the stream to the end of this plateau. From here the tour leads over several terrain levels to the ridge between Hohes Kreuz and Hohes Haus. Finally, follow the ridge to the left and reach the Hohes Haus at 2784m.

After an extensive ski tour, the physical well-being should not be neglected. In the Winkeltal valley the team of the Reiterstube restaurant takes care of that.

The Reiterstube restaurant is located in the Winkeltal valley, about 5 km from the centre of Außervillgraten. Villgrater and Tyrolean specialities, homemade pastries, lamb and game specialities are served in the cosy rooms and on the sun terrace. Individual wishes are possible at any time by prior arrangement. In winter, the “Reiterstube” is a meeting point after tobogganing on the floodlit track and a starting point for horse-drawn sleigh rides and ski tours.
